textiles glossary A-B

A

Active detergents - are synthetic detergents with surface-active agents made of other chemicals to aid in emulsifying soils and suspending dirt in aqueous solution.

Amines (azo dyes) / Amine-releasing - an amine is a distinctive smelling organic compound with one or more of the hydrogen atoms in ammonia replaced by organic groups. Some Amines are considered carcinogenic. An Amine releasing compound releases amines.

Ammonia treatment - the use of ammonia to create a similar effect to Mercerizing

Absorbable Organic Halogens (AOX) - the general name for a group of chemicals often mentioned in wastewater testing. AOX's include halogens, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine.

Aquatic Toxicity (minimum requirement) - a measurement of how toxic a substance is to organisms that live in water. This is usually given as a 'Lethal Concentration 50' figure, which is given in ml per litre of water. This figure shows you how much of a substance in ml would be needed (in a litre of water that organism is in), to kill 50% of the test subjects. The lower the LD50 figure, the more toxic the substance is. Sometimes this figure is also accompanied by the number of hours it has taken to kill 50% of the test subjects.

Aromatic solvents - solvents made of compounds that contain an unsaturated ring of carbon atoms, typified by benzene structures. These solvents are characterised as volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Auxiliary agents - additional substances that in some way supports or accelerates a process.

Azo dyes - Dyes characterised by the presence of an azo group (-N=N-) as the chromophore. Azo dyes are found in many of the synthetic dye classes.

B

Bio-accumulative - means any process where substances builds up in living organisms, as they breathe contaminated air, drink or live in contaminated water or eat contaminated food. To bio-accumulate literally means to accumulate in a biological system.

Blending - the combination of two or more types of staple fibres and/or colours in one yarn.
