textiles glossary C-F

C

Carding - a process in the manufacture of spun yarns whereby the staple is opened, cleaned, aligned and formed into a continuous untwisted strand called a sliver

Chlorination of wool - as part of a process to prevent wool from shrinking, chlorine is used to degrade the fibre's surface. This makes it easier for polymers to coat the fibre, preventing tiny hook like barbs on the fibre from grasping nearby fibres. This prevents the fibres from being pulled closer together, causing the wool to shrink.

Chlorophenols (PCP, TeCP) - substances produced when phenol rings have a number of chlorine atoms attached.

Chlorophenols (as TCP, PCP) - broad-spectrum pesticides produced when phenol rings have a number of chlorine atoms attached. Used as anti-mildew agents in textiles.

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) - an acid ether derivative of cellulose formed by the reaction of alkali cellulose with chloroacetic acid. The sodium salt of this compound is commonly used as a stabiliser or an emulsifier.

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) - a measure for the pollution of wastewater with chemically degradable substances.

Complexing agents and active detergents - complexing agents are substances capable of forming a complex compound with another material in solution.

Consignee - the company or person to whom the goods are delivered, who then further process/pack/label or market them.

D

Desizing - removal of natural starches or sizing from fabrics.

Disperse dyes - A class of slightly water-soluble dyes originally introduced for dying acetate and usually applied from fine aqueous suspensions. Disperse dyes are widely used for dyeing most of the manufactured fibres.

E

Edging - a border consisting of anything placed on the edge to finish something (such as a fringe on clothing or on a rug).

F

Formaldehyde - a one-carbon aldehyde (CH2O) existing as a colourless pungent gas at room temperature. This compound is used primarily as a disinfectant and preservative and in synthesising other compounds and resins.

Fluorocarbons - Carbon-fluorine compounds that often contain other elements such as hydrogen, chlorine, or bromine. Common fluorocarbons include chlorofluorocarbons and related compounds (ozone depleting substances), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and perfluorocarbons (PFCs).

Flax retting sites - a place where the process of retting takes place.
