GGenetically modified organisms (GMO) - a plant, animal or microbe whose DNA has been changed in a way which is impossible through conventional techniques. It has different characteristics to the unmodified organism. Modifying techniques include: · deleting, adding, doubling, changing or moving genes within an organism · transferring genes from one organism to another, and · modifying existing genes or constructing new genes and incorporating them into an organism.Glyoxal (and other short-chain aldehydes) - highly reactive intermediate compound used for the preparation of dyes. Greasy wool scouring sites - a place where wool is cleaned. HHalogenated solvents - solvents containing halogen have improved solvency compared with the hydrocarbons from which they are derived and, in addition, flammability is reduced. Some of these solvents are highly toxic, and precautions must be taken to avoid inhalation of their vapours.Heavy metals - metallic chemicals like cadmium, arsenic, copper and zinc that can be harmful pollutants when they enter soil and water. Hydroentanglement - process for forming a fabric by mechanically wrapping and knotting fibres in a web through the use of high-velocity jets or curtains of water. IIn Conversion - agricultural land (or a product of that land) that has not been managed to organic standards for a long enough period to be regarded fully organic.International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements (IFOAM ) - a global federation of organic organisations working to promote organic food and farming internationally. It sets basic organic standards and its subsidiary, IOAS, has an accreditation system for certification bodies that wish to adopt its standards. SA Cert. are one of these bodies and are able to offer certification in compliance with IFOAM standards. International Labour Organisation (ILO) - a specialised agency of the United Nations (UN) developing international standards of labour rights covering such areas as working conditions, equal opportunity, social security, forced labour, freedom of association and minimum age restrictions. ISO 65 - an international standard for certification bodies to ensure they provide a non-discriminatory and impartial service. KKiering - prolonged boiling of cotton or flax materials with alkaline liquors in a large steel container known as a kier, either at or above atmospheric pressure.Knitted hosiery - made by intertwining threads in a series of connected loops rather than by weaving.
